Hair loss is a widely spread condition in both men and women, especially those in their middle age. Although there are a number of causes that can trigger hair shedding or balding, many of them are easily identifiable. The most common cause is genetic, and there is really little we can do about it. A number of diseases, such as diabetes, lupus, or syphilis, can bring about massive hair loss. In such a case, alopecia can be improved or reversed by treating the main illness.

Tooth infections, stress, and hormonal disturbances can lie at the root of hair loss or contribute to the already existing condition. Very often, a trivial lack of fats, proteins and vitamins (malnutrition) causes a lot of hair to fall out. If you are dieting, or of your daily menu is heavy on junk food and carbohydrates, even complex ones, and lacking animal fats and quality proteins, you hair may become weak and fragile and eventually fall out. Most strict vegetarians, particularly vegans who do not eat any animal products, have thin, fragile hair and suffer from persistent hair loss.

How can you prevent hair loss? In many cases, health of hair can be supported by simple measures without the use of expensive hair-care products or medications. Use our eight tips to prevent hair loss and ensure that you always have thick and healthy hair:

1. Eat a natural diet that emphasizes quality animal products, fresh and lacto-fermented vegetables, and some fruits. Go easy on grains, sweets, starches, and processed foods. Overproduction of insulin due to a long-term high-carbohydrate diet not only negatively effects hair growth, but also depresses the thyroid function, damages the pancreas, and leads to a host of diseases. Healthy hair is a direct result of a healthy, natural diet that contains all necessary vitamins, minerals, enzymes, proteins, and fatty acids.

2.   Spice up you food with unprocessed sea salt only (Celtic sea salt from France is your best choice), since it contains all important trace minerals, including easy-to absorb iodine in optimal quantities. Numerous trace minerals in unrefined salt are important for the health of many glands and the production of many hormones. Thick, shiny hair is a sigh of a good hormonal balance.

3.   Incorporate Yoga in your life! Inverted postures, such as the Shoulder Stand or the Head Stand, are very beneficial for your hair since they improve the scalp circulation and allow hair follicles to obtain all necessary nutrients for rapid hair growth.

4.   To further improve the circulation, give your scalp a daily massage, preferably with an application of beneficial oils or herbal infusions.

5.   Avoid taking unnecessary medication and “life-style drugs”, since they can negatively influence the health of your hair.

6.   Protect your hair from the sun, frost, and other elements. Always cover your head when you are in a direct sunlight or when the weather outside is cold and windy.

7.   Do not shampoo your hair every day. Frequent shampooing washes out natural hair oils and can trigger hair loss. Use only natural shampoos, conditioners, and other hair-care products.

8.   Do not wear tight hairstyles.
