Hair-Restoring Properties of Onion

Onion is the most versatile of all vegetables. Native to Asia, India and North America, it has been a medicinal and flavouring ingredient for thousands of years. The ancient Egyptians ate it raw and used it in medical tinctures and rubs. The Greeks valued onion for its curative and strength-supporting powers. Some varieties native to the American continent were gathered and used as a “strong medicine” by indigenous populations. And in virtually all parts of the world, onion was greatly praised for its dramatic hair-restoring properties.
Universally recognised healing qualities of onions include their antibacterial, cleansing, stimulating, and nourishing powers. Onions contain a number of beneficial minerals and vitamins, among which are all-important vitamins C and B6, sulphur, calcium, magnesium, potassium, and germanium. High amounts of sulphur in onions make them particularly effective in regenerating hair follicles and stimulating hair regrowth. In addition, naturally-concentrated sulphur compounds have been proven to show additional hair-restoring and even anti-carcinogenic properties.
The antibacterial action of onions helps clean the scalp from disease-causing bacteria and fungi. It is effective in treating dandruff, itchy scalp, and excessive sebum production. According to some research, eating raw onions on a daily basis cleans the intestinal tract from parasites and harmful micro-organisms, thus healing “leaky gut”, improving digestion, and helping treat pathological skin, scalp, and hair conditions. Onions can also assist in restoring kidney function, protect from excessive blood clotting, lower insulin and blood sugar levels, and break up mucus in the lungs.
Relatively high levels of germanium, found in ordinary onions, work as oxygen transporters and can improve scalp circulation and assist in the effective delivery of various nutrients to hair follicles. When applied topically, onion preparations have heating and stimulating powers, thus regenerating hair roots and restoring the growth of healthy hair.
A recent study, conducted by researchers of the Baghdad Teaching Hospital Department of Dermatology, examined traditionally-claimed hair-regrowing qualities of onions. The study confirmed that topically-applied onion preparations could be highly effective in treating baldness. In fact, almost three fourth of the study participants with alopecia showed considerable improvements in their hair condition after a long-term scalp treatment with onion juice.
The best way to use onions as a hair remedy is to apply freshly-squeezed, raw onion juice (which can be extracted with a help of a grater or electric juicer) directly onto balding areas. These treatments should be repeated daily, and the onion juice should be massaged deep into the scalp and hair roots and then left on the scalp for about half-an-hour before shampooing. In most cases, regular onion treatments will result in dramatic improvement of hair thickness within just several months. Since onion juice restores hair follicles and improves scalp circulation, it will helps cure alopecia and promote the growth of new, strong hair.
