Plant He Shou Wu in Traditional Chinese Hair Treatment

A traditional medicinal plant of China, He Shou Wu, is praised as one of the most potent and widely used herbs of alternative Chinese medicine. Known in Europe and America as Chinese Knotweed, as well as under its scientific name Polygonum multiflorum, this miraculous plant has become a basis for a number of hair loss products, especially those manufactured and marketed as Shen Min hair remedies.

Chinese Knotweed has a long history of beneficial uses against a number of diseases and conditions, including hair loss. In a juiced form, it has been applied as a powerful styptic capable of stopping nosebleeds. A tea made from the dried herb is recommended as a topical astringent medication for curing bleeding haemorrhoids. Drinking He Shou Wu tea is believed to heal the gastrointestinal tract and stop diarrhoea. In traditional Chinese medicine, this herb is also used to protect the skin against the sun radiation, tonify blood, prevent digestive disorders, eliminate insomnia, treat kidney problems, cure fatigue, improve poor eyesight, strengthen frail bones, reverse aging, and benefit a number of other conditions that are linked to “fragile, weakened yin” and “malnourished blood”.  Neurodegenerative and some autoimmune diseases respond particularly well to treatment with He Shou Wu. In clinical trials, a number of patients suffering from Alzheimer’s disease have shown noteworthy improvements in their condition after a course of natural He Shou Wu treatment. Traditional Chinese healers also claim that the herb has potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and can be effective in cancer and liver therapies, as well as in preventing cardiovascular disease, lowering the levels of “bad” cholesterol, and reducing pathogens involved in malaria and tuberculosis.

In treating hair fall and greying hair, traditional Chinese medical practitioners use natural products derived from the tuberous roots of He Shou Wu: “hair vitamins” that are effective in supporting and strengthening of hair roots and follicles; topical hair tinctures that are capable of minimizing and even reversing male-pattern baldness; and a variety of other hair treatments that bolster the growth of thinning hair and restore the natural colour of greying hair. The herb is also known as a powerful remedy to cure brittle, dry, weak, or chemically-damaged locks. The alleged effects of He Shou Wu hair remedies have been extensively studied and are presently recognized by modern science. This herb is known as one of the most effective and credible natural solutions to treat alopecia and premature greying of hair. Conducted studies have shown that products containing root extracts of Chinese Knotweed can hinder the production of DHT from the “male hormone” testosterone – the metabolic process that triggers massive hair fall and inevitable balding in many aging men and some aging women.

According to the alternative Chinese beliefs, hair loss is caused by a blood deficiency and damaged flow of qi, or life-supporting energy. If the nourishing stream of qi cannot reach the scalp tissues and hair roots, due to hormonal imbalances, stress, or inadequate intake of nutrients from food, the hair suffers and starts to fall out. Since He Shou Wu works to restore the pathways of qi, it naturally helps to rebuild the heath of the scalp and hair.

Unique hair-restoring properties of He Shou Wu are universally confirmed by many experts in the field of hair medicine. Although the effectiveness of the herb in different patients with alopecia may vary, most balding individuals testify that He Shou Wu has greatly improved their hair condition. Almost in every patient, naturally-beneficial qualities of Chinese Knotweed have enhanced hair rejuvenation, stimulated a noticeable growth of new scalp hair, promoted better-looking locks, and improved various scalp conditions, including dermatitis, itchiness, dandruff, and even some cases of psoriasis. Remarkably, the noted improvements lasted even after the treatment with He Shou Wu had been discontinued, which is rarely observed with the use of other, both herbal and pharmaceutical, hair treatments.

Another phenomenal medicinal action of He Shou Wu is in its ability to postpone or even completely reverse the greying of hair. In restoring the natural hair colour, the herb in often used in mixture with mulberry extracts derived from its leaves or fruits. Traditional Chinese medicine states that premature greying of hair is caused by a deficiency of Jing – the essence of life. When Jing becomes weak, and this usually happens as the person ages, his hair starts greying and thinning. Since He Shou Wu is a powerful Jing tonic, it is able to not only restore the initial hair colour, but also reduce balding and slow down the entire process of aging.

Of course, He Shou Wu is not a panacea against hair loss, particularly taking into consideration that any hair treatment can have unpredictable results. However, the herb has been able to improve the hair condition of the overwhelming majority of balding patients who used it. If He Shou Wu is right for you, it can become a great option to obtain quick results, no matter how bad you hair fall is. Above all, this amazing herb is known to have little toxicity and, therefore, can be used in prolonged treatments of alopecia.
