More on Hair-Restoring Properties of Onion

Our previous article showed that onion therapy had been used to restore the growth of hair for hundreds of years. Currently, onion is a widely popularised hair remedy renowned for its superb hair-strengthening potential and other medicinal qualities that benefit the health of the scalp and locks. Recent research shows that a miraculous effect of onion on hair growth is largely due to its high sulphur content.

Sulphur, also known as a mineral that supports healing and beauty, has a wide range of health-sustaining functions in the body. It is an important component of hair heath, essential for the development of cell membranes, gel-like connective tissue, and specific proteins found in the skin, nail and hair. Sulphur is included in the chemical structure of many amino acids – building blocks of protein, and it also participates in a multitude of biochemical processes. In addition, it can protect us against infections, radiations and pollution. An adequate supply and utilization of this mineral is crucial for a smooth, good-looking skin, strong nails and thick hair. High levels of sulphur in our collagen tissue play a supportive role in diminishing hair loss and encouraging a rapid restoration of damaged hair follicles, thus contributing to hair re-growth.  Besides, sulphur-containing topical applications are known to boost blood circulation and diminish inflammatory symptoms.

Sulphur deficiency can be indicated by a dry, scaly skin, rigged, soft nails, and brittle, thin hair. Other symptoms may include proneness to allergies and autoimmune disorders, chronic fatigue, migraine headaches, fibromyalgia, and even diabetes. Crash dieting, or just inadequate nutrition, is often responsible for diminished levels of sulphur in the body. Since it is a major mineral that counteracts the process of aging, it is critically important to ensure an adequate supply of sulphur from foods we eat. Onion is one of the best dietary sources of sulphur. Others are cruciferous vegetables, such as cabbage or bok-choi, eggs, dairy products, and a variety of meats.

Those who suffer from hair loss or excess shedding of hair will benefit from topical applications of sulphur-rich onion extracts directly on the balding areas of the scalp. A study conducted several years ago and published at the Journal of Dermatology showed that onion applications were an effective treatment for alopecia areata. A whopping 73 percent of the participants experienced a noticeable reduction in hair shedding and had different degrees of hair re-growth.

The following types of onion hair loss therapy were proven effective to boost hair growth in balding folks:

•    Mix a chopped onion with a cup of rum and leave this mixture in a room temperature for a day. Strain the liquid and use it for massaging your scalp.

•    Mix a chopped onion with a cup of dried leaves of stinging nettle and ¼ cup of vodka. Let the elixir stand for several days, then strain the liquid and use it for topical scalp applications.

•    Mix ½ chopped onion with 1 tbsp raw honey and massage this paste into the leather of your scalp.

•    Rub a freshly-cut slice of onion into balding areas of the scalp, and follow the procedure by a gentle massage with liquid honey.

•    Prepare an onion hair rinse: boil 3 cups onion skins in one quart water, remove from the heat, and let the mixture stand for an hour. Strain the liquid and apply this rinse on the hair after shampooing.

For a pronounced hair growth effect, these treatments should be repeated daily for at least a month.
