Hair Loss and Exercises

There have been doubtful talks about hair loss and exercises. Does physical activity increase the loss or does it help hair to stay healthy? In this article we will try to look at different points of view.

Those who support hair loss idea say that exercises increase the level of testosterone which later turns into DHT, the hormone that does nothing else, but damage hair follicles leading to hair loss. They say that the exercises do more harm to women than men, because they are more sensible to hormonal changes.

Dr. Loren Pickart, the creator of copper peptide female hair regrowth solution, says that “severe exercises tend to reduce estrogen and raise testosterone. While there are many positive aspects of exercise training, this effect on hair should be kept in mind since it can increase the rate of hair loss.”

Well, too much of exercising was always considered unhealthy because it works muscles, joints and the heart too much and in older days many professional sportsmen suffer the consequences. At the same time mild exercising, morning jogging, moderate weight-lifting, yoga, fitness, and aerobics have always been praised.

The inventor of other hair loss treatment, Dr. Alex Khadave has different opinion than Dr. Pickart. He believes the things that bring health to the whole body cannot be harmful to hair in particular. He says that exercises influence on hair is several positive ways.

First of all, human body produces cortisone in stressful situations. Cortisone is a hormone that makes hair go to resting phase early shortening the length of hair life. Resting hair looks fine and thin. Many exercises, especially cardiovascular and aerobics help to relax and forget about stressful moments. So they stop the production of cortisone and are scientifically proven to reduce its amount.

Secondly he says that the level of DHT decreases with exercises too. Dr. Khadave is not the only one who thinks so: studies described in European Journal of Applied Physiology in 2004 have shown that the levels of cortisone, total testosterone, and free testosterone become lower after vigorous aerobic exercises. Free testosterone is the kind that tends to turn into DHT. Also, several studies have shown that aerobic exercises increase the level of some good hormones, for example, sex hormone binding globulin, and reduce free testosterone and DHT in particular.

The longer one studies all the aspects of exercises, the more confused it gets. However, if a person believes that exercises can help, the above mentioned facts show that aerobics works better than any other physical activity. It is also recommended to have yoga or meditation classes because they help to relax and go away from stress.

Several yoga scalp exercises might be helpful too: they increase blood flow to the follicles enriching hair with oxygen and vitamins. Here are a few of them available to anybody:

1. Stand up with your legs apart. Breathe in and out slowly. Lean forward gradually till the head is below waist level. Pat your head gently for 30 seconds with knuckles. Bring your head back up and pat it again. Do this 5-7 times.
2. Stand up straight and breathe. Turn your head right, and then look straight in front of you. Do this 5 times. Turn your head left and then again straight in front. Repeat five times. Move your head downward, and then lift. Do the exercise 5 times. Move the head in circular motion clockwise and then anticlockwise.
3. Put the fingers in a lock and put them on the back of the head. Move the head up and down while keeping the hands in the same position, so with the move of the head the hands move to the forehead. Do the exercise five times and repeat two times a day.
