Beta-Catenin is Associated with Cancer and… New Hair Growth!

Recently, University Of Michigan researchers have made a curious discovery: beta-catenin, a type of protein which is usually associated with the development of malignant cells, can also stimulate the growth of new hair! This hair growth phenomenon was noticed on experimental adult mice by D. Van Mater, a graduate student who was involved in cancer research funded by the National Cancer Institute. His unexpected hair-growth finding was documented in the journal Genes & Development.

Hair Loss Induced By Medications for Parkinson’s Disease Can Be Hampered

Baldness can be a side effect of a number of modern medications. Hair loss is especially pronounced in Parkinson’s disease patients who are treated with dopamine drugs Pramipexole or Ropinirole. In a recent study, conducted by a group of researchers from New York and published in the journal of the American Academy of Neurology, two women, who were treated for Parkinson’s disease with the dopamine agonists and who suffered from medication-related hair loss, showed a successful regression in baldness after the drugs were replaced with another type of medication.

Pigment Cells Trigger Alopecia Areata, Researchers Discovered

Researchers of the Haifa’ Institute of Technology, Israel, have made a new discovery shedding light on some of the cellular triggers of alopecia areata - a widely spread and still mysterious hair loss condition. The researchers have suggested that baldness often starts at the level of melanocytes - the cells that produce hair colour. This new finding has been reported at the Journal of Investigative Dermatology.

Vitamin Supplement Recalled from the Market Due to its ‘Significant Hair Loss’ Effect

On March, 28, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) released a warning about serious adverse reactions caused by taking two popular vitamin supplements - Total Body Formula and Total Body Mega Formula. The products were recalled from the market immediately after a number of people experienced significant side effects, the most profound of which was massive hair loss. Despite the fact that the affected individuals were taking these liquid supplements in recommended doses and did not exceed them, the adverse reaction occurred after about a week of Formulas’ ingesting.
