Herbal Support for Thinning and Greying Hair: Home-Made Medicinal Rinses

A regular use of herbal hair rinses should be an integral part of treating scalp and hair problems. Natural herbal rinses are also beneficial for healthy locks and will keep them strong, thick, and shiny for many years to come! Rinses are easy to prepare at home – all you need is usually a bunch of dried herbs, vinegar, and plain water. The preparation is not time-consuming, but the benefits are enormous. Treatments with properly prepared medicinal rinses can restore the health of your hair, combat hair loss, rejuvenate thinning hair and weakened follicles, strengthen hair shafts and eliminate split ends, improve the intake of nutrients by hair roots, heal scalp irritation, and even prevent your hair from premature greying!

While making your own herbal rinses, try to select the best ingredients available: the herbs that you picked yourself in unpolluted areas; raw, organic apple-cider vinegar purchased from a health-food store; and pure well, spring, or rain water. However, if you live in an urban environment, it is still perfectly fine to buy dry herbs from your local herbalist, or to use filtered tap water instead of spring one.

Herbal Rinse for Dark Hair

This rinse, when used regularly, about twice a week after shampooing, prevents dark hair from greying and even can restore the natural hair pigmentation without applying to harsh hair dyes. In addition, it will support the health of your hair and can even be helpful in improving the scalp circulation and curing mild hair loss.

To make, take a few bags of your regular black, or Oolong, tea, ¼ cup dried sage leaves, and 2 tablespoons each of dried stinging nettles and rosemary leaves. Steep the tea bags in 2 cups boiling water for 15 minutes, and then discard the bags. Reheat the tea so that it boils again, remove it from the heat, and add to it the herbal mixture. Steep, covered, for about an hour. Strain the liquid, and immediately use it as a beneficial hair rinse! Just pour this fragrant herbal water through your hair several times, catching the liquid in a wide bowl. At the end, rinse your hair thoroughly with plain warm water.

The rinse can be made in bulk and kept in the refrigerator for several days before using.

Quick Herbal Rinse to Combat Hair Loss

It is the simplest type of hair rinse, which can be prepared just within 15 minutes. All you need is herbs and water! The combined medicinal power of these specially selected plants will act to strengthen hair roots, improve the intake of nutrients by hair follicles, and fight mild cases of balding.

To prepare this rinse, take a handful of dried sage, chamomile, rosemary, and stinging nettle, put the herbs in 2 cups boiling water, and steep for just 15 minutes off the heat. Strain, squeeze the remaining liquid out of the herbs, and your wonderful, fragrant rinse is ready! Just pour it through your hair several times after shampooing. You need not additional rinsing with plain water.

Medicinal Herbal Rinse with Apple Cider Vinegar

This healing rinse works wonderfully to restore a natural acid-alkaline balance of the scalp and hair. It also completely cleans the hair from dulling traces of soap, fungi, and dry skin flakes, which makes it particularly suitable for treating dry hair and scalp irritation.

Take ¼ cup each of dried bergamot (if not available, substitute for peppermint or basil) and dried rosemary leaves. Place the herbs in a wide-mouthed ceramic jar. Heat 2 cups apple cider vinegar almost to a boiling point, and pout it over the herbal mixture. Cap the jar tightly and let it stand in a room temperature for about a week, shaking the content vigorously every day. When ready, strain the vinegar through a funnel or cheesecloth sheet into a clean bottle, and cap it tightly. The vinegar will keep for many months without refrigeration.

To use, mix 1/3 cup healing herbal vinegar with 2 cups lukewarm water, and pour it over the hair several times as a final rinse.
