Hair Loss and Nutrition

Although healthy eating turned into some sort of fashion in recent years, millions of people still stay on unhealthy fast-food meals because this kind of lifestyle is easier, cheaper, more available and comfortable. Ancient Indian science says, “We are what we eat”, and it is an absolutely true statement.

All organs of the body consist of the food we feed to it, this is why if there are not enough vitamins and minerals the body system decides to give up on the least important items. For the majority of people these are hair and nails. However, if there are good amounts of nutritious factors restored, the hair becomes strong, shiny and thick and nails stop peels and become harder.

This fact does not mean than nutritious food would prevent pattern baldness inherited from ancestors, but it is still a beneficial factor: it makes the life-cycle of hair strands longer and provokes the follicles to function better. The sources for hair loss are different and in some cases it seems that nothing helps, but a balanced diet full of vitamins would not hurt anybody even if it does not slow down hair shedding. In other cases good food is a really great help and is the only remedy for hair loss: almost all people with eating disorders such as anorexia or bulimia experience hair loss as a result of nutrition deficiency.

In order to give health to hair a person should have a good amount of vitamins and minerals in everyday meals. In general it means that there have to be fresh vegetables and fruits, lean meat, whole grains, nuts and legumes on the table. If the participant wants to be more specific in hair loss diet, here are the vital nutrients for it:

•    Vitamin A comes in all orange produce: carrots, cantaloupe, pumpkin, etc.; leafy vegetables; broccoli; peas and liver.
•    Vitamin B has different groups, but most important ones are B6 and B9 (Folic Acid). Vitamin B6 is present in many meat products, beans, potatoes and poultry. Vitamin B9 is found in leafy green vegetables, sunflower seeds, liver and beans.
•    Vitamin E is abundant in many natural oils: corn oil, safflower oil and soybean oil.
•    Vitamin C or Ascorbic Acid comes in citrus fruit, red sweet peppers, rosehips, broccoli, parsley and the majority of berries: strawberries, currant, blueberries, etc.
•    Iron is one of the main nutrients in red meat, apples, fish, grains, dry fruit, beans and dark leafy vegetables.
•    Silica can be found in oats, whole wheat, millet, barley, and algae. It is also recommended to have oat straw or horsetail tea in order to enrich the body with silica and trace minerals.
•    Iodine is present in cow milk, kelp, boiled eggs, Mozzarella cheese and strawberries.
•    Zinc in found in beef, lima beans, wild turkey, eggs and nuts.

Specialists also advise to stay away from big amounts of sugar, because it brings imbalance to hormones and leads to hair loss. During the hormonal disorder bigger amounts of testosterone turn into DHT (dihydrotestosterone) which plays a leading role in male pattern baldness. Salt, tobacco and alcohol have similar effect and cause baldness and dandruff.

For the best results with nutritious food the participants are recommended to stay on a cleansing juice program before starting healthy eating. It cleans the bowels and leads to better absorption of vitamins and minerals.
